Getting the news in 2021

News is one the preferred and the most desired sources for people to obtain daily information. Since old times, the means of providing news has evolved and the advent of technology made it easier and faster to access information. Early and basic journalism started since 16th century in Europe and the information were conveyed through handwritten newspapers which mostly contained political, military, and economic information. However, as time passed, the new methods, such as broadcast news and the most recently Internet were presented.

Who were the respondents?

The small research about the ways of getting the news in 2021 was done and the results are shared below. The total number of people answering in the survey was 250. While the number of females was 131, the males were estimated to be 118. People of different age intervals participated in the survey and the majority was the people of the 18–24 age interval (46%), while the least was the people older than 41 years old, only 16%.

How often do people follow the news?

With reference to the analysis, out of 100% of all the respondents, 35% are following the news multiple times per day, whereas the number of people following the news once per day was 45 (18.00%). Only 3.0% of all the respondents are not interested in news, thus they never follow them. From the figure below (Fig.1), it is obvious that the rate of females and males in the frequency of following the news are approximately the same, having a slight difference. However, despite the small differences, it is worthy mentioning that the rates for men are surpassing those for females almost for every frequency, except the “never”. The “never” is calculated to be 4% for females and 3% for males.

What do people prefer?

Nowadays, because of an availability, the range kinds of news are provided every day, from business to world news. It is undeniably true that the preferences of humans are different; for this intention 10 different kinds were asked in the survey, namely: business, crime, entertainment, local news, national news, world news, politics, science, magazine and sports. The most preferable kind of news is “World News”, which is approximately 25% of all the respondents, while the least is “Crime” (2%). In addition, the preference differences among the females and males were researched, as well. According to the significant differences shown in the bar chart (Fig. 2), obviously, “business”, “crime” and “sports” are mostly preferred by men. Simultaneously, women are interested in all other fields. “World news” is the only one type, in which the equal number of both sexes are interested in.

Did people forget about the radio and newspapers?

The usage of the social media has been broaden, taking an essential part in people’s lives. In 21st century, the immense number of people are using the social media to follow the news, which was estimated to be approximately 63%, while the number of people getting news from other sources is considerably less. For example, the request for the newspapers and radios are very low, almost 0%. Moreover, for several years of popularization of the social media, there was a substantial decrease amongst TV users.

Which service is the dominant one?

Since the beginning of the 20th century, many new social media websites and applications have been introduced to the society and many of them have become very popular. In the social media, for the last several years, the number of websites sharing news is increasing, as well. The most popular social media service was calculated to be Instagram followed by Twitter. Nevertheless, the least popular one was LinkedIn (5%).

Social media for age intervals:

The chart below illustrates the popularity of social media services among various age intervals. Overall, the highest number for every service was estimated to be for the people between 18 and 24 years, which means that the consume of the social media is very popular for the young generation. The people of 25–32 years age interval prefer mostly Facebook in comparison with 33–40, whose majority is using Telegram. YouTube is popular among those, whose age is above 41.

Company dominance:

Very famous TV broadcast companies started business with the radios. While the time has passed, the improvements in the internet have occurred, which would aggravate the development of the TV companies. Nevertheless, nowadays, despite the TV broadcast, these companies have also improved their influence in the internet by creating websites and sharing the news. In this survey, chiefly, the attitudes regarding the companies like BBC, CNN and Euronews were asked. From the figure 5, the popularity of BBC can be observed. 19% prefer other websites, like “The Economist”, “The Washington Post”, “The independent” and other local and international websites. With a slight difference, 18% of the respondents voted for CNN, while 10% voted for Euronews.

Do people know the events?

Furthermore, the majority of all the respondents acclaimed that they are somewhat informed about the current events (34%). While 4% of people are not informed about the daily situation, nearly 3% admitted that they are not interested in the current events at all.

Conceivably, taking into consideration the outcomes of this survey, it can be said that as time passes, the need in TV and other sources apart from the internet and social media will decrease in future.
